PERampanel Shows High Success in Treating Epilepsy Alone
Source: Epilepsia open
Summary
A study called the MonoPER study looked at how effective and tolerable the medication Perampanel (PER) is when used alone to treat adults with focal or idiopathic generalized epilepsy. Researchers followed 74 adults, aged 18 to 90, for one year after they started taking PER. Some patients were starting this medication for the first time, while others switched from a different seizure medication.
The results showed that 70% of the patients became seizure-free after 12 months, and nearly 80% had their seizures reduced by at least half. Most patients (85%) continued taking PER for the entire year. Additionally, those who started PER to help with sleep were able to stop using other sleep medications and reported better sleep quality. While about half of the patients experienced side effects, such as sleepiness and dizziness, only a small number stopped taking the medication due to these issues.
These findings are important because they suggest that PER can be an effective and manageable treatment option for adults with epilepsy in real-world settings. However, it’s worth noting that this study involved a small group of patients at a single center, which means more research is needed to confirm these results in larger and more diverse populations.
