Boost Social Support and Resilience for Teens with Epilepsy

Source: Epilepsy & behavior : E&B

Summary

A recent study looked at how social support and resilience affect the mental health and stigmatization of adolescents with epilepsy. Researchers gathered data from 249 young people with epilepsy at two hospitals in Şanlıurfa. They used several questionnaires to measure mental health, experiences of stigma, perceived social support, and resilience.

The study found that 44% of the adolescents reported experiencing high levels of stigma related to their condition. There was a strong link between poor mental health and higher levels of stigma. However, those who felt they had good social support and were more resilient experienced less stigma. In fact, both social support and resilience helped lessen the negative impact of mental health issues on stigma.

These findings highlight the importance of building strong support systems and promoting resilience among adolescents with epilepsy. By doing so, it may be possible to reduce feelings of stigma and improve mental health outcomes. However, the study is limited by its design, which only captures a snapshot in time, and more research is needed to explore these relationships further.
