Brivaracetam Offers Cost-Effective Seizure Treatment in Jordan

Source: Medicine

Summary

This study looked at the cost-effectiveness of a medication called brivaracetam (BRV) for treating patients in Jordan who have focal-onset seizures that do not respond to other treatments. Researchers compared BRV to three other newer seizure medications: eslicarbazepine (ESL), lacosamide (LCM), and perampanel (PER). They used a model to analyze data over two years, focusing on how well each medication helped patients achieve seizure control.

The key findings showed that BRV led to the highest percentage of patients becoming seizure-free compared to the other medications. While the cost of BRV was lower than ESL and PER, it was slightly higher than LCM when looking at the cost per percentage of patients who became seizure-free. Specifically, BRV was found to be cost-saving compared to ESL and PER, while it was still considered cost-effective compared to LCM based on international guidelines.

These findings are important because they suggest that BRV could be a more affordable and effective option for patients with difficult-to-treat seizures in Jordan. However, the study has some limitations, such as being based on a model rather than real-world data and focusing only on a specific group of patients. More research is needed to confirm these results and see how they apply to different populations.
