Cenobamate Works Well for Adults with Epilepsy and ID

Source: Seizure

Summary

This study looked at how well cenobamate, a medication for epilepsy, works in adults with intellectual disability (ID) compared to those without ID. Researchers focused on adults with epilepsy at a specialized epilepsy center from 2021 to 2024. They monitored 108 patients, including 51 with ID, to see how well they responded to the treatment over a year.

The key findings showed that cenobamate was effective for both groups. After 12 months, about 53% of patients in both groups had a significant reduction in seizures. While patients with ID had a higher retention rate in the first three months, by the end of the year, both groups had similar rates of staying on the medication. Side effects like tiredness and dizziness were common in both groups, but they did not significantly differ in how many patients stopped taking the medication due to these effects.

This study is important because it suggests that cenobamate can be a good treatment option for adults with epilepsy and intellectual disability, similar to those without ID. However, it is worth noting that the study had limitations, such as being retrospective and involving a small number of patients. More research is needed to confirm these findings and explore long-term effects.
