New Spanish Questionnaire Measures Satisfaction After Epilepsy Surgery

Source: Epilepsia

Summary

Researchers studied the satisfaction of patients who had epilepsy surgery by translating and validating a questionnaire called the Epilepsy Surgery Satisfaction Questionnaire-19 (ESSQ_19) into Spanish. This study involved 150 adult patients from five Spanish-speaking countries who had undergone epilepsy surgery at least one year before participating. Most of these patients had temporal lobe epilepsy, and many had been seizure-free for over a year.

The key findings showed that the Spanish version of the questionnaire, called the ESP-ESSQ_19, is reliable and effective in measuring patient satisfaction. It had a high internal consistency, meaning the questions were well-related to each other, and it also showed strong reliability over time. Additionally, the results from the ESP-ESSQ_19 correlated well with other validated questionnaires, confirming its accuracy in assessing satisfaction.

This study is important because it provides a tool for healthcare providers to better understand how patients feel after epilepsy surgery, which can help improve care and support. However, the study had some limitations, such as including only adult patients and focusing on those who had surgery at least a year prior, which may not represent all patients with epilepsy.
