CBD May Help Reduce Seizures in CDKL5 Deficiency Disorder
Source: Epilepsia open
Summary
This study looked at the effects of highly purified cannabidiol (CBD) on girls with CDKL5 deficiency disorder (CDD), a condition that causes severe seizures and other challenges. Nine girls, aged between 1 and 24 years, participated in the study, where they took CBD alongside their usual medications for up to one year. The researchers wanted to see if CBD could help reduce seizures and improve other symptoms like sleep and motor skills.
The results showed that most of the girls had a significant reduction in seizures during the first three months of treatment. Eight out of nine girls experienced more than a 50% decrease in seizure frequency at that time. Additionally, some families reported improvements in alertness, eye contact, movement, sleep, and constipation. While there were some mild side effects, none were serious, and most families decided to continue using CBD even after the study ended.
These findings are important because they suggest that CBD might help not just with seizures but also with other symptoms of CDD. However, the study was small and did not include a comparison group, which means more research is needed to confirm these results and understand the long-term effects of CBD treatment.
