This systematic review examined associations between climate-related exposures and seizures in children age 18 or younger, including children with and without diagnosed epilepsy. Researchers searched six databases and tracked citations, identifying 33 eligible studies.
Twenty studies examined temperature, 16 examined air pollution, and 10 examined other exposures, including humidity and atmospheric conditions. Some studies assessed more than one exposure. The findings were summarized narratively rather than combined into a single overall estimate.
What they found
Nitrogen dioxide (NO2), an air pollutant, showed the most consistent associations with seizures, particularly among children with established epilepsy. Effect sizes were generally modest; one representative study reported 2% to 4% increases in hospitalizations per 10 micrograms per cubic meter increase in NO2.
Associations between ambient temperature and seizures were less consistent, although findings for febrile seizures were more consistent. Overall, the review concluded that NO2 and temperature extremes may increase seizure risk in children, but findings varied across studies.
Limits of the evidence
The studies differed in how they measured environmental exposures, defined seizure outcomes, and adjusted for possible confounding factors. These differences may have contributed to the inconsistent findings. Because the studies assessed associations, the review does not establish that pollution or temperature changes cause seizures.
Only one study was conducted in a lower-middle-income country, and none were conducted in low-income countries. This limits how broadly the findings can be applied. The abstract does not provide detailed results from the risk-of-bias assessment.
